Application Scalability for Clustered Server Systems

Application scalability is a significant issue in modern e-commerce systems. As an e-commerce business grows the load on the server system increases to the point where the current hardware is unable to service the load without significant delays or errors. As the business activity increases the traditional route is to transfer the application to more powerful, multiprocessor hardware as well as distributing the database, web tier and application server to different hardware systems. However there is a significant cost implication for this and a limit on the maximum load that can be adequately maintained. An alternate approach is to use a cluster of application servers distributed over a set of commodity servers. This paper investigates the scalability of application server’s performance using standard benchmarks on clustered servers.
